EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the iconic figure of Sir Walter Raleigh, immortalized in 1775 by artist W Sharp. Raleigh, a renowned English adventurer and writer, gained favor with Queen Elizabeth I and was knighted in 1585. However, his life took a tragic turn when he was accused of treason by James I, Elizabeth's successor. The image portrays Raleigh as a distinguished man with a bearded face adorned with an intricate lace ruff. His attire reflects the fashion of the time, featuring embroidered clothing complemented by a feathered hat. In one hand, he holds a globe symbolizing his explorations in the New World while in the other hand rests what appears to be tobacco leaves - an emblematic reference to his introduction of this plant to England. The print also captures elements that hint at both war and naval warfare; an anchor is visible alongside images of cherubs representing concepts such as adventure and exploration. The inclusion of vegetables like potatoes highlights Raleigh's contributions to introducing new crops from America into Europe. This striking portrait serves as a testament to Sir Walter Raleigh's significance during the 16th-18th centuries. It pays homage to his accomplishments as well as his tragic end - imprisoned in London's Tower before being executed in 1618 for alleged treason against King James I.
