Self and Partner, 1873. Artist: Joseph Swain

Self and Partner, 1873. Mr Gladstone, Liberal Prime Minister, shakes hands warmly with Mr Gladstone, Chancellor of the Exchequer. This cartoon relates to the state of Mr Gladstones government at the end of the last session of parliament in the summer of 1873. The Liberals were weakening, as illustrated by a recent by-election in Greenwich at which the Conservative candidate was returned with a very healthy majority. Gladstone was also experiencing problems with his own ministers and August 1873 saw a wide reshuffle which left Gladstone filling the roles of both Prime Minister and his own Chancellor. From Punch, or the London Charivari, September 20, 1873

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this 19th-century political cartoon titled "Self and Partner, 1873" we see a depiction of the state of Mr. Gladstone's government at the end of the last session of parliament in the summer of 1873. The artist, Joseph Swain, captures an important moment as Mr. Gladstone, Liberal Prime Minister, warmly shakes hands with his own Chancellor of the Exchequer. The cartoon symbolizes several challenges faced by Gladstone's government during that time. The weakening position of the Liberals is illustrated through a recent by-election in Greenwich where a Conservative candidate won with a significant majority. Additionally, internal problems within his own ministers led to a reshuffle in August 1873 which left Gladstone filling both roles as Prime Minister and Chancellor. The metaphorical significance behind two heads shaking hands becomes apparent in this artwork - it represents unity and collaboration between these two key figures within the Liberal Party. However, it also hints at potential issues arising from such consolidation of power. This satirical engraving was originally published in Punch magazine on September 20th, 1873. It serves as an insightful commentary on the political landscape during that era while showcasing Swain's artistic talent and attention to detail. Today, this print stands as a historical artifact capturing an important moment in British politics and offers us a glimpse into William Ewart Gladstone's leadership challenges during his tenure as Prime Minister.
