Sir Joseph John Thomson, physicist and inventor, 1900

Sir Joseph John Thomson, British physicist and inventor, 1900. Thomson studied sciences at Trinity College, Cambridge. After graduating, he continued to work at Cambridge University and in 1896 began experiments on cathode rays, demonstrating that they were in fact particles with a negative charge and were much smaller than an atom. These particles were later renamed electrons. In 1906, he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the esteemed physicist and inventor, Sir Joseph John Thomson, in 1900. A prominent figure in British science, Thomson's groundbreaking discoveries revolutionized our understanding of atomic structure. Having studied sciences at Trinity College, Cambridge, Thomson embarked on a remarkable career that saw him become an integral part of Cambridge University. It was here that he conducted his pioneering experiments on cathode rays in 1896. Through meticulous research, he conclusively proved that these rays were composed of particles with a negative charge - particles which would later be known as electrons. Thomson's profound contributions to the field of physics earned him the prestigious Nobel Prize in Physics in 1906. This well-deserved recognition solidified his status as one of the most influential scientists of the 20th century. In this portrait captured within a laboratory setting, we witness Thomson engrossed in his work amidst an array of scientific apparatus. His focused expression and profile exude intelligence and determination. The monochrome aesthetic adds a timeless quality to this image from the early 1900s. Preserved by The Print Collector and sourced from Oxford Science Archive, this print serves as a testament to Sir Joseph John Thomson's immense impact on our understanding of particle physics. It stands as both a tribute to his legacy and an inspiration for future generations embarking on their own scientific endeavors.
