EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the majestic Short Empire flying boat Corinthian, as it glides effortlessly over the tranquil waters of Alexandria, Egypt. Dating back to the late 1930s or early 1940s, this remarkable aircraft was one of only 42 Empire class flying boats ever built by Short Brothers in Rochester, Kent. Operated first by Imperial Airways and later by BOAC (British Overseas Airways Corporation), these flying boats played a vital role in connecting Britain with its far-flung colonies across Asia, Africa, and Australasia. The Corinthian itself entered service in 1937 and became an emblem of luxury air travel during that era. However, tragedy struck on March 22nd, 1942 when the plane crashed in Darwin, Australia resulting in two fatalities. Despite this unfortunate event, the legacy of the Short Empire flying boats lives on as a testament to aviation history. This monochrome image not only showcases the impressive size and design of this iconic aircraft but also offers a glimpse into a bygone era of air transport. With its propellers spinning gracefully against the backdrop of Alexandria's urban landscape and Mediterranean Sea beyond, this photograph is truly a timeless piece capturing both beauty and historical significance.
