EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite 18th century drawing by Dutch artist Jan Brandes, titled "Sea birds and sea fish," showcases the vibrant and diverse marine life of the Low Countries during the late 1700s. Brimming with intricate detail, the artwork captures the essence of the natural world, with a harmonious blend of avian and aquatic creatures. At the heart of this composition lies a blue shark (Carcharodon carcharias) and a dorade (Dorade spp.), both gracefully depicted in their underwater habitat. The blue shark, with its striking electric-blue coloration, is shown in the throes of a hunt, its powerful jaws agape and ready to strike. The dorade, a popular fish in European cuisine, is shown swimming gracefully, its scales shimmering in the water. Surrounding these magnificent creatures are an array of seabirds, including gulls (Laridae) and skimmers (Rynchops spp.), all expertly rendered with remarkable accuracy and attention to detail. Among the avian species, flying fish (Exocoetidae) are a particular highlight, their wing-like pectoral fins spread wide, allowing them to glide effortlessly above the water's surface. Brandes' masterful use of pencil, watercolor, and paper in this sketchbook page reveals the artist's deep appreciation for the natural world and his remarkable skill in capturing its beauty. This precious piece of heritage art, now housed in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, is a testament to the scientific curiosity and artistic prowess of the 18th century Low Countries.
