EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken by renowned American photographer Dorothea Lange in 1936, captures a poignant moment at the Kern migrant camp in California during the Great Depression. The image depicts a group of preschool children in a makeshift nursery school setting, under the watchful eyes of trained teachers. The children, dressed in ragged clothing, appear focused and engaged in their activities, despite the challenging circumstances of their displacement. The Kern migrant camp was home to thousands of displaced families, who had been forced to leave their homes due to the economic hardships brought about by the Great Depression. Many of these families were farmers, who had been unable to make a living due to drought and other agricultural challenges. The Farm Security Administration (FSA), a New Deal agency, established the camp to provide temporary relief and support to these families. The establishment of the nursery school was an important initiative aimed at providing early education and care to the young children in the camp. The teachers, employed by the Office of War Information (OWI), worked tirelessly to ensure that the children received a solid educational foundation, despite the harsh living conditions. This photograph is a powerful reminder of the resilience and determination of the human spirit, even in the face of great adversity. It also underscores the importance of access to education and care, particularly for the most vulnerable members of society. The image is part of Dorothea Lange's extensive body of work documenting the social and economic conditions of the time, and is now held in the Library of Congress.
