Pre's Choisis,
EDITORS COMMENTS
named after the French phrase for "choosing before others," was the elegant summer residence of Albert Herter and his wife Adele McGinnis Herter, located on the shores of Georgica Pond in East Hampton, New York. Designed by architect Grovesnor Atterbury in 1898-1899, the house was a gift to the Herters from Mary Herter, Albert's mother, as a wedding present. The estate covered 75 acres of picturesque land, adorned with lush gardens and landscaping designed by Adele and Albert. This photograph, taken by renowned American photographer Frances Benjamin Johnston in 1913, showcases the stunning exterior of Pre's Choisis. The house's red-brick facade, with its intricate stonework and tall, arched windows, stands proudly against the backdrop of the verdant landscape. The outdoor area boasts a beautiful patio, furnished with wicker chairs and a flower-filled pot, inviting relaxation and enjoyment of the natural surroundings. The garden, teeming with vibrant flowers, trees, and a trellis adorned with climbing vines, adds to the idyllic setting. The staircase leading down to the pond, with its elegant lanterns and lush greenery, beckons visitors to explore the tranquil waters. This image, a testament to the beauty and elegance of American architecture and landscaping during the early 20th century, is a must-see for anyone interested in the history and aesthetics of the era. Taken from the Library of Congress's collection of lantern slides hand-colored between 1910 and 1920, this photograph is a precious piece of history, offering a glimpse into the lives of the wealthy and influential families who summered in the Hamptons over a century ago. The image, filled with color and detail, invites us to imagine the serene and luxurious lifestyle that once flourished at Pre's Choisis.
