EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning full-length portrait captures the elegant and imposing presence of Louis-Philippe-Joseph d'Orléans, Duke of Chartres, later known as Philippe-Égalité (1747-1793). The Duke, a member of the House of Bourbon and a cousin of King Louis XVI, is depicted in his military uniform as a colonel of the Hussars. The richly textured brocade coat and waistcoat, adorned with intricate gold braid and buttons, are in stark contrast to the simple, dark boots and breeches. The Duke's cavalry hat sits atop his head, completing the military attire. The portrait, created in the 18th century, is an oil painting on canvas and is currently housed at the Carnavalet Museum in Paris. The Duke's intense gaze and strong posture convey a sense of authority and confidence. The background is kept simple, with a subtle keystone arch providing a sense of depth and location. The Duke of Orléans was a significant figure in French history, serving as a regent during the minority of King Louis XVI and later becoming a key figure in the French Revolution. His military career, as well as his political and social standing, are reflected in this magnificent portrait. The painting is a testament to the opulence and grandeur of the 18th century, as well as the enduring legacy of the French monarchy.
