EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a historic moment in British military history - the Pitt Drilling Militia at Walmer Castle in 1803. After William Pitt the Younger resigned as Prime Minister, fears of a French invasion lingered, prompting him to form a volunteer cavalry unit at Walmer Castle in Kent. In addition to this unit, he also established a bombardier infantry and armed fishing boats fleet, all of which were reviewed from the castle. The artist behind this engraving is JW Evans, who beautifully depicts the scene after R Caton Woodville's original drawing. The attention to detail brings forth an atmosphere of determination and readiness among these brave men. This image is part of "Life of Napoleon Bonaparte". Volume II by William Milligan Sloane, published by The Century Co. , Macmillan & Co. Limited in 1896. It offers us a glimpse into the tumultuous times during Napoleon Bonaparte's reign as Emperor of France. As we observe this monochrome photograph, we are reminded not only of Britain's efforts to defend itself against potential invasions but also of the larger context - the Napoleonic Wars that shaped Europe during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. The Pitt Drilling Militia at Walmer Castle serves as a testament to patriotism and resilience amidst uncertain times. This historical snapshot allows us to appreciate both its artistic value and its significance within military history.
