EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, the future King Edward VII of Great Britain and Ireland, Prince of Wales, is presented with a magnificent panther during his royal visit to India in 1876. The panther, one of the largest species known, was a remarkably tame animal that had been reared from a cub by Sergeant Wilkins of the 109th Regiment. The panther's skin, which shines like satin, is of a rich tawny or orange-tan colour on the upper part of the body, with white underneath. The sides are marked with seven lines of black clustered spots, five or six of the spots to each cluster, creating a striking contrast against the tawny ground. The presentation to His Royal Highness was performed by Sergeant-Major Affleck, on behalf of the sergeants of the regiment. A photograph was taken by Private Jordan, of the 109th, from which we get this illustration. The image captures the Prince of Wales in India, surrounded by men of the military, in the midst of the exotic and intriguing Hindoostan. The panther, now caged and tame, is a testament to the power and control of man over nature. The photograph is a fascinating glimpse into the past, offering a glimpse into the life of the Prince of Wales during his visit to India in the nineteenth century. This photograph is a valuable addition to any collection of historical images, showcasing the beauty and majesty of a wild animal, as well as the rich history and culture of India during the British colonial era. The image is a reminder of the connection between man and nature, and the power of the human spirit to tame and domesticate even the most fearsome of creatures. The photograph is also a testament to the skill of the photographer, Private Jordan, who captured this moment in time for future generations to enjoy and learn from.
