Oliver Lodge, British physicist, 1904. Artist: Spy

Oliver Lodge, British physicist, 1904. Lodge (1851-1940) is best remembered for his investigations into the propagation of electromagnetic waves. He made valuable contributions to the development of wireless telegraphy and is said to have given the first public demonstration of wireless telegraphy. He conducted research on electrons, lightning and the ether. In 1893 he discredited the ether theory (an early attempt to explain the nature of the Universe) and paved the way for the theory of relativity. Cartoon from Vanity Fair, London, 1904, when Lodge was first Principal of Birmingham University

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of Sir Oliver Lodge, a renowned British physicist in 1904. Created by Spy (Sir Leslie Ward), this lithograph from Vanity Fair showcases Lodge's pensive and thoughtful demeanor as he stands dressed in a distinguished suit. Lodge, born in 1851 and passing away in 1940, is best remembered for his groundbreaking investigations into the propagation of electromagnetic waves. His valuable contributions to the development of wireless telegraphy revolutionized communication systems during that era. In fact, he is credited with giving the first public demonstration of wireless telegraphy. Throughout his career, Lodge conducted extensive research on electrons, lightning, and even challenged prevailing theories like the ether theory - an early attempt to explain the nature of the Universe. By discrediting this theory in 1893, he paved the way for Albert Einstein's theory of relativity. As depicted in this cartoon-like portrait, Lodge exudes intelligence and expertise within his field. With hands casually tucked inside his pockets, he embodies both confidence and curiosity. This image serves as a testament to Lodge's significant role within British science during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Today, we remember Sir Oliver Lodge not only as a brilliant physicist but also as an influential figure who shaped our understanding of electromagnetism and communication technologies.
