New Year's Reception at the White House, Washington - from a sketch by our special artist, 1862. Creator: Unknown

New Year's Reception at the White House, Washington - from a sketch by our special artist, 1862. New Year's Day is celebrated with great enthusiasm by the Americans generally. The custom which requires the ladies of a family to keep open house for all gentlemen who choose to call grew up in New York, which city is said to have imported it from Amsterdam, the mother city...from private circles it soon spread, in a modified form, into public life. In the United States the theory that men in official position are the servants of the people is rigidly acted upon. Hence it became the fashion for the Mayor of a city to receive his "friends" on this day - the said friends including every male inhabitant of the city. In like manner the Governor of the State was held to the obligation to "receive" at the State capital...The President's reception is divided into two parts - first, a special reception of the diplomatic corps in the forenoon, and at noon a general reception of the public of both sexes, who enjoy the honour of a shake of the hands with, or a bow from, the chief "public functionary" of the Union, and the highest embodiment of the sovereignty of the people'. From "Illustrated London News", 1862

EDITORS COMMENTS
New Year's Day, 1862, at the White House: A Tradition of Hospitality and Sovereignty New Year's Day in America is celebrated with great enthusiasm, marked by the time-honored tradition of open houses for all gentlemen to call. This custom, believed to have originated in New York and imported from Amsterdam, has spread from private circles to public life. In the United States, where the belief that those in official positions serve the people is deeply ingrained, mayors, governors, and even the President are expected to uphold this custom. In this sketch from the Illustrated London News in 1862, we witness the President's New Year's Reception at the White House. The day's festivities are divided into two parts. In the forenoon, a special reception is held for the diplomatic corps. At noon, the public is invited for a general reception, where they are granted the honor of shaking the President's hand or bowing before him, symbolizing the highest embodiment of the sovereignty of the people. The scene unfolds in the grand White House reception room, filled with an array of elegantly dressed men and women, all eager to partake in this cherished tradition. The President, standing before a fireplace, extends a warm welcome to the throng of guests, basking in the spirit of unity and camaraderie that New Year's Day brings. This sketch offers a glimpse into the past, reminding us of the enduring significance of hospitality and the people's connection to their leaders during this joyous New Year's celebration.
