New Associates of the Royal Academy: Mr. Eyre Crowe, A.R.A. 1876. Engraving from a photograph by Mr. George Crowe. This versatile painter of figure subjects was born in 1821, in London, and is a son of Eyre Evans Crowe, the well-known author. He was a student of the Royal Academy, and subsequently of the Ecole des Beaux Arts, at Paris. He also entered the atelier of Paul Delaroche, at Paris, and with many other pupils followed the master to Rome in 1844. In 1852, Mr. Crowe accompanied, as amanuensis, the late W. M. Thackeray on his first visit to the United States. Mr. Crowe also held for some years the appointment of Inspector of the Schools of the Science and Art Department, which appointment he relinquished in 1873. He has been a very constant exhibitor at the Royal Academy and elsewhere'. From "Illustrated London News", 1876
