The Naval Contingent Crossing London Bridge into Southwark, London, 1897. Artist

The Naval Contingent Crossing London Bridge into Southwark, London, 1897. Both Processions on Jubilee day - the Colonial and the Royal - were headed by a few Life Guards, and a strong naval detachment. In the case of the Royal Procession the bluejackets dragged after them six naval guns - no light labour, but performed with an ease and smartness which won universal admiration. Queen Victoria (1819-1901) celebrated her Diamond Jubilee (60th anniversary of her reign - June 1837-June 1897). Her reign of 63 years and seven months was longer than that of any previous British monarch. Here crowds line the streets to watch the military parade. From Sixty Years A Queen: The Story of Her Majestys Reign, by Sir Herbert Maxwell. [Harmsworth Bros, Limited, London, c1897]

The Naval Contingent Crossing London Bridge into Southwark, London, 1897

EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print captures a historic moment during Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee in 1897. As the crowds line the streets of London, two processions take center stage - the Colonial and the Royal. Leading both processions are a few Life Guards and a strong naval detachment. In this particular scene, we witness the awe-inspiring sight of bluejackets dragging six naval guns across London Bridge into Southwark. The sheer strength and smartness with which they perform this laborious task earn them universal admiration from onlookers. Queen Victoria herself is present for this grand military parade, celebrating her remarkable reign that spanned over six decades. Her majesty's presence adds an air of patriotism to the atmosphere as she watches her loyal subjects pay tribute to her enduring rule. The image not only showcases the pageantry and spectacle of the event but also provides us with a glimpse into nineteenth-century Britain. It highlights the importance placed on military might during that era and serves as a testament to British power at its zenith. Preserved through time by Sir Herbert Maxwell's lens, this print allows us to immerse ourselves in history and appreciate both the magnitude of Queen Victoria's reign and the dedication shown by those who served in her navy.
