Napoleon on Horseback, c18th century. Artist: Carle Vernet
Napoleon on Horseback, c18th century. Napoleon Bonaparte, French general and Emperor, (1769-1821) enjoyed a meteoric rise through the ranks of the French Revolutionary army. In 1799 he led a coup to overthrow the government, the Directory, and became first consul and effective dictator of France. In 1804, he declared himself Emperor, and began a series of military campaigns across Europe, the Napoleonic Wars. Victories such as Austerlitz and Jena led to France establishing its power across much of the continent. In 1812, however, Napoleon embarked on a disastrous invasion of Russia and defeat at Leipzig in 1813 led to his abdication and exile to Elba. He ecaped in 1815, raised another army, but was finally defeated by Wellington at Waterloo, and exiled again to St Helena. From The Studio Volume 14 by Ralph Nevill. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures Napoleon Bonaparte on horseback during the 18th century, showcasing the remarkable talent of artist Carle Vernet. Known for his meteoric rise through the ranks of the French Revolutionary army, Napoleon's legacy as a French general and Emperor is immortalized in this powerful image. The photograph depicts Napoleon at the height of his power, having led a successful coup to overthrow the government and establish himself as first consul and effective dictator of France. His subsequent declaration as Emperor in 1804 marked the beginning of a series of military campaigns across Europe known as the Napoleonic Wars. Renowned victories such as Austerlitz and Jena solidified France's dominance over much of the continent. However, Napoleon's ambitious invasion of Russia in 1812 proved disastrous, leading to defeat at Leipzig and ultimately his abdication and exile to Elba. Undeterred by setbacks, Napoleon escaped from Elba in 1815, raising another army only to face final defeat at Waterloo by Wellington. He was subsequently exiled once again, this time to St Helena where he would spend his remaining years until his death in 1821. This historic print serves as a testament to both Napoleon's military prowess and enduring impact on European history. It offers viewers a glimpse into an era defined by rebellion, revolution, war, and one man's indomitable spirit that left an indelible mark on generations to come.
