Models of ships in the Naval Gallery at the South Kensington Museum, 1865. 'The Caledonia, which has, since 1856, been named the Dreadnought...has taken the place of the old Dreadnought as the hospital-ship at Greenwich...She was designed by Sir William Rule, built at Devonport dockyard, and launched in 1808...This is what was reckoned a first-rate man-of-war at the time when our present captains first went to sea as midshipmen. The Caledonia...is now to be removed from the Thames, as the sick seamen will be accommodated in Greenwich Hospital. The Queen, built at Portsmouth between 1833 and 1839, from the designs of Sir William Symonds...[was] the very last sailing line-of-battle ship that was built, or that will ever be, for the British Navy...Her armament was 110 guns...She was converted to a screw two-decker in 1859 at Sheerness. The Agamemnon was the first man-of-war built for the screw-propeller, being laid down at Woolwich in November, 1849, and launched in May, 1852. She was designed by Mr. J. Edye...Her engines are of 600-horse power...It will, of course, be remembered that in 1857 and 1858 the Agamemnon was employed in laying down the Atlantic telegraph cable'. EDITORS COMMENTS
A glimpse into naval history: Models of ships at South Kensington Museum, 1865. This photograph print captures a moment in time when the world was on the cusp of significant change. The models on display showcase some of the most iconic warships of their era, including 'The Caledonia', which served as a hospital ship and played host to sick seamen at Greenwich Hospital.
Amongst these vessels is 'The Queen', built between 1833-39 and considered the last sailing line-of-battle ship ever constructed for the British Navy. Her impressive armament of 110 guns would have been awe-inspiring in its time, but by the mid-19th century, she had already given way to more modern designs.
Also on display is 'The Agamemnon', a pioneering warship that was converted from sail to screw propulsion and played a key role in laying down the Atlantic telegraph cable. This remarkable ship's engines boasted an impressive 600-horse power, making it one of the most advanced vessels of its time.
This photograph print provides a fascinating glimpse into the world of naval architecture during this pivotal moment in history. The models on display are not only testaments to human ingenuity and innovation but also serve as reminders of the significant technological advancements that were transforming society at large.
