Messrs. Allsopp and Sons pale-ale brewery at Burton-on-Trent, 1862. [This] establishment...[has] attained a world-wide celebrity. Messrs. Allsopp's leviathan works are continually in full operation, and until the enlargement in 1859 they were not considered extensive enough to meet the demand for their ales. In that year, in consequence of the large increase in their business, Messrs. Allsopp erected...the present building; and, with the further object of facilitating their large traffic, the firm applied to Parliament to construct, at its own cost, lines of railway to connect their two breweries with the cooperage, and with the London and North-Western and Midland Railways. These private railways cross the streets of Burton on a level, and are now regarded by the inhabitants as a boon in relieving the formerly congested traffic of the thoroughfares; but their construction...was in the first instance fiercely opposed...Large quantities of [Burton beer] were...exported to Russia, and "piva Burtonski, " was a favourite beverage with the Empress Catherine...the wars of the French Revolution...almost entirely banished what old Marshal Blucher used to call "La bonne biere de Burton" from the continent of Europe'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the impressive Messrs. Allsopp and Sons' pale-ale brewery in Burton-on-Trent, captured in 1862. The establishment has achieved international renown, with its colossal works operating at full capacity around the clock. Prior to an expansion in 1859, the brewery was considered insufficient to meet the escalating demand for their prized ales. In response, Messrs. Allsopp constructed the current building, and in an effort to streamline their logistics, they petitioned Parliament to build, at their own expense, private railways to connect their two breweries with the cooperage and the London and North-Western and Midland Railways. These railways, which now cross the streets of Burton on a level, were initially met with fierce opposition from the townspeople. However, they have since become a cherished asset, alleviating the previously congested traffic in Burton's thoroughfares. The renown of Burton beer extended far beyond the British Isles, with large quantities being exported to Russia. In fact, piva Burtonski was a favored beverage of Empress Catherine II. The French Revolutionary Wars almost entirely banished Burton beer from the European continent, but its reputation endured, with old Marshal Blucher famously extolling its virtues as 'La bonne biere de Burton'. This photograph offers a glimpse into the rich history and significance of Messrs. Allsopp and Sons' brewery in Burton-on-Trent during its heyday.
