Members of the Polar Party Getting Into Their Sleeping-Bags, c1911, (1913). Artist

Members of the Polar Party Getting Into Their Sleeping-Bags (Left to right - P.O. Evans, Scott, Bowers, Wilson. Enlarged from a cinematograph film), c1911, (1913). Petty Officer Edgar Evans (1876-1912), Lieutenant Henry Birdie Bowers (1883-1912), Dr Edward Wilson (1872-1912) and expedition leader Captain Robert F Scott (1868-1912) all died on the way back from the South Pole. The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. From Scotts Last Expedition, Volume I. [Smith, Elder & Co. London, 1913]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant print captures a solemn moment in history, showcasing the members of the ill-fated Polar Party as they prepare to enter their sleeping bags during Captain Robert Falcon Scott's final expedition. Taken from an enlarged cinematograph film, this image immortalizes Petty Officer Edgar Evans, Lieutenant Henry Birdie Bowers, Dr Edward Wilson, and expedition leader Captain Robert F Scott moments before tragedy struck. The Terra Nova Expedition set out on 1 June 1910 with the objective of reaching the South Pole and conducting scientific research. However, upon their arrival on 17 January 1912, they discovered that Norwegian explorer Amundsen had beaten them to this monumental achievement by a month. Despite facing blizzards and dwindling supplies on their return journey, Scott and his team persevered until tragedy befell them at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were discovered eight months later, revealing their heroic struggle against nature's unforgiving forces. This photograph serves as a haunting reminder of their courage and determination in pursuit of scientific knowledge and exploration. Taken from "Scotts Last Expedition" published in 1913 by Smith Elder & Co. , London; this image stands as a testament to the indomitable spirit of these brave men who sacrificed everything for discovery. Their legacy lives on through their contributions to Antarctic exploration and our understanding of this remote region.
