EDITORS COMMENTS
This map print, titled "Novissima et perfectissima Africae descriptio" (The Most Recent and Perfect Description of Africa), was created by the Dutch cartographer Carel Allard around 1690. The intricately detailed map showcases the African continent as it was then known, with the Atlantic and Indian Oceans framing its edges. The cartouche at the bottom left of the map features a compass rose, as well as allegorical figures representing Africa personified as a woman, surrounded by African animals and vegetation. The allegorical figures include cherubs, or Amorini, who represent love and beauty, as well as putti, or puttos, which symbolize playful innocence. The female figure of Africa is depicted with a crown of feathers, signifying the diverse peoples and cultures of the continent. The map is adorned with various geographical features, including rivers, mountains, and coastal regions, rendered in ink, watercolor, and etching. The map also highlights the presence of African animals, such as lions, crocodiles, and geese, which were often used to illustrate exotic locales in European maps of the time. The inclusion of these animals, along with the allegorical figures, reflects the European fascination with the exotic and the unknown. This map is a testament to the artistic school of the Low Countries during the seventeenth century, a time when the Netherlands was a leading center for cartography and mapmaking. The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, one of the world's greatest museums, is home to this precious piece of heritage art. The map not only provides valuable historical information about Africa during the colonial era but also serves as a visual representation of European perceptions and attitudes towards the African continent during this period of imperialism and exploration.
