EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, we are transported back to the 18th century, where a letter from Jonathan Swift to Henrietta Howard takes center stage. The artist himself, Jonathan Swift, captures the essence of his emotions through his impeccable handwriting and signature. Written from Dublin by Swift, Dean of St Patrick's Cathedral, the letter reveals his disappointment in Queen Caroline for not fulfilling her promise to bestow upon him a medal. He also expresses his dismay at the sacrifice of John Gay, a fellow poet, due to political motives orchestrated by Sir Robert Walpole. Swift's words carry weight as he reminds the Queen of their previous conversations about Ireland and subtly blames Mrs. Howard for misleading him with hints of preferment in England during King George II's accession. However, amidst these grievances lies an undertone of admiration as he congratulates Mrs. Howard on her (supposed) loss of favor at Court and compliments her character. This facsimile provides us with a glimpse into the complex dynamics between royalty and literary figures during this era. It serves as a reminder that even renowned authors like Swift were not immune to political intrigue and unfulfilled promises within royal circles. As we delve into this historical artifact captured by The Print Collector in 1899, we are reminded once again that behind every piece lies stories untold and emotions immortalized through ink on paper.
