Interior of the tent of the Sultan of the Inner Kyrgyz Horde, Devlet-Girey. 1862. Sheet 49 from the album "Description ethnographique des peuples de la Russie", volume 1. Description ethnographique des peuples de la Russie (Ethnographic description of the peoples of Russia) is a two-volume work published in Saint Petersburg in 1862 to mark the millennium of the founding of the Russian Empire (traditionally traced to the founding of the state of Kievan Rus in 862). The work is dedicated to Tsar Alexander II. Volume 1 consists of 62 colored illustrations depicting ethnic groups from across the Russian Empire in their traditional dress. This volume also includes a fold-out table listing the different ethnic groups and the size of their populations in the cities in the empire, as well as a colored-coded ethnographic map that shows which groups inhabited which parts of the empire. Volume 2 is all text, and consists of detailed essays, in French, about the ethnic groups of the empire, their history, culture, language, and so forth, -which reflect the state of anthropological and historical knowledge of the 1860s. The book is the work of Gustav-Fedor Pauli (1817-67), a German ethnographer who immigrated to Russia

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken by Karlis Huns in 1862, offers a rare glimpse into the interior of the tent of Devlet-Girey, the Sultan of the Inner Kyrgyz Horde. The image is part of the ethnographic description of the peoples of Russia, a two-volume work published in Saint Petersburg to mark the millennium of the Russian Empire. Devlet-Girey's tent, adorned with intricate patterns and vibrant colors, reflects the rich cultural heritage of the Kyrgyz people. The Sultan's throne, located at the center of the tent, is surrounded by ornate rugs and cushions, suggesting a life of luxury and comfort. The presence of weapons and hunting gear near the throne underscores the importance of nomadic traditions and the role of the horse and hunting in Kyrgyz society. The ethnographic description of the peoples of Russia, also known as "Description ethnographique des peuples de la Russie," was the work of Gustav-Fedor Pauli, a German ethnographer who had immigrated to Russia. The publication of this work marked a significant contribution to the study of the diverse ethnic groups that inhabited the Russian Empire in the mid-19th century. This photograph is a testament to the extensive research and documentation efforts of Pauli and his team, providing a valuable insight into the material culture and daily life of the Inner Kyrgyz Horde during this period. The image also serves as a reminder of the rich cultural heritage and diversity that continues to define the peoples of Central Asia today.
