Inauguration of the Statue of Queen Isabella II, at Madrid, 1850. Creator: Unknown
Inauguration of the Statue of Queen Isabella II, at Madrid, 1850. The 10th October, the twentieth birthday of Queen Isabella II. was celebrated...by the inauguration of a bronze statue of her Majesty, which has just been set up in the Plaza del Oriente...the general kissing hands took place-the authorities, ministers, old functionaries, grandees of Spain, general officers, chiefs of the garrison of Madrid, and other no abilities, as usual, participating in this ceremony...The statue is the work of Senor Piquer [and] is from seven to eight feet high...We congratulate Senor Piquer on this fine specimen of his noble art. We could wish, nevertheless, that some other costume had been chosen for her Majesty, in which she would not have to support part of the vestment with her left arm. This is an office which, on all occasions, is performed by her attendants'. From "Illustrated London News", 1850

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the historic moment of the Inauguration of Queen Isabella II's statue in Madrid, Spain, on October 10, 1850. The young monarch, who turned 20 that day, graced the occasion with her presence, surrounded by a grand assembly of Spanish authorities, ministers, military officers, and other dignitaries. The statue, a magnificent bronze creation by Senor Piquer, stands at seven to eight feet high in the Plaza del Oriente. The general kissing of hands ceremony took place, with the attendees paying their respects to the Queen and the new monument. The statue is an impressive example of Senor Piquer's artistic abilities, although some critics have noted their disapproval of the Queen's left-handed support of her vestment in the statue. This engraving was published in the Illustrated London News, providing a glimpse into the grandeur and pageantry of the Victorian era. The image showcases a diverse crowd of people, including horsemen and riders, soldiers, and onlookers, all gathered to witness this significant event in Spanish history.
