The Four Horsemen, from The Apocalypse, c. 1498. Creator: Albrecht Dürer (German, 1471-1528)

The Four Horsemen, from The Apocalypse, c. 1498. In 1498 Durer published a book illustrating the Revelation of John or the Apocalypse of John, the last book of the New Testament. The images were unique in their large scale, breadth of concept, and unity of design. The first book to be both published and illustrated by the artist, it comprised a title page and 15 full-sheet woodcuts featuring text on the verso of all the sheets except the last one. Often visible through the paper, the text mars the image on the recto of the sheet. The finest impressions were most often printed without text, like this one of The Four Horsemen. Here, Durer suggested the vigorous momentum of the horsemen through the windblown clothing of the riders, the windswept clouds, and the figures trampled beneath the hooves of the approaching horses

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases "The Four Horsemen" from Albrecht Dürer's renowned work, "The Apocalypse" published in 1498. Dürer, a German artist of the late 15th and early 16th century, created this series of woodcuts as both illustrations and text for the Revelation of John, the final book of the New Testament. What sets these images apart is their grand scale, expansive vision, and cohesive design. In this particular print without accompanying text, we witness Dürer's masterful depiction of motion through various elements. The horsemen's clothing billows in the wind while clouds sweep across the sky with an undeniable force. Beneath the horses' hooves lie figures trampled under their approaching might. Dürer's attention to detail and his ability to convey movement make this image truly remarkable. The finest impressions were often printed without text like this one, allowing viewers to fully appreciate his artistic prowess. Displayed at The Cleveland Museum of Art, this woodcut represents a significant contribution to Renaissance art by one of Germany's most celebrated artists. Its inclusion in Heritage Art/Heritage Images collection ensures that its beauty and historical significance can be admired for generations to come.
