EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating engraving by Russian artist Ivan Ivanovich Kolpakov, taken from the atlas "Atlas of the Great Voyage Around the World by I.F. Kruzenshtern," published by the Russian Academy of Sciences. This historic work, consisting of 109 plates based on the drawings of V.G. Tilesius, a doctor, naturalist, and official artist of the Kruzenshtern expedition, is a testament to the rich cultural and geographical discoveries made during Russia's first circumnavigation of the globe between 1803 and 1806. The engraving depicts a lively holiday scene on St. Catherine Island, located in Brazil, South America. The image is filled with figures of men and women, dressed in colorful clothing, celebrating and dancing together. The scene is set against the backdrop of a hillside with buildings and a church in the distance. The male and female figures are depicted in various poses, some holding hands, others dancing in pairs, all expressing joy and merriment. In the foreground, a man plays a guitar, while a woman plays a tambourine. A group of men are seen in the background, some holding guns, possibly as a sign of protection or celebration. This engraving offers a unique glimpse into the meeting of cultures and the exchange of traditions that occurred during the Kruzenshtern expedition. The image is a reminder of the rich cultural heritage and the diverse peoples and places that were encountered during this historic voyage.
