Hernan Cortes (1485-1547), Spanish conquistador who conquered Mexico

Hernan Cortes, Spanish conquistador who conquered Mexico. Cortes (1485-1547) landed in Mexico in 1519. With a force of only some 600 men, he succeeded in overthrowing the empire of the Aztecs, a civilization numbering 5 million. He was able to achieve this partly due to the natives being terrified of the Europeans horses and firearms, neither of which they had seen before. In addition, the Aztecs believed a prophecy that they would be visited by a light-skinned bearded god, the Quetzalcoatl, who had taught them agriculture and government in the past, and whose return they were to welcome with great ceremony. Cortes was able to exploit his resemblance to the Quetzalcoatl to great effect

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Hernan Cortes, the renowned Spanish conquistador who fearlessly conquered Mexico during the 16th century. With a mere 600 men by his side, Cortes managed to overthrow the mighty Aztec empire, which boasted a population of five million. His triumph can be attributed to several factors: firstly, the indigenous people were awestruck and terrified by the Europeans' horses and firearms, technologies they had never encountered before. Secondly, the Aztecs held a prophecy close to their hearts - that they would be visited by Quetzalcoatl, a light-skinned bearded god who had previously taught them agriculture and government. Exploiting his resemblance to this revered figure with great cunning, Cortes gained an advantage over his adversaries. In this remarkable portrait captured in engraving style by an unknown creator from Heritage Images collection titled "Hernan Cortes (1485-1547), Spanish Conquistador Who Conquered Mexico" we witness the commanding presence of this influential leader. Adorned in traditional military attire with a distinguished hat and beard that exudes authority, Cortes personifies strength and determination as he gazes into eternity. This image serves as a powerful reminder of Spain's imperialistic ambitions during that era while shedding light on one man's audacious quest for conquest. It symbolizes both historical significance and human resilience against insurmountable odds – forever immortalizing Hernan Cortes as one of history's greatest conquerors.
