The Great Schools of England: St. Paul's School, east end of St. Paul's Churchyard, 1862. Creator: Unknown
The Great Schools of England: St. Paul's School, east end of St. Paul's Churchyard, 1862. This ancient and still flourishing foundation, though in some respects taking rank below a few of its competitors, has strong claims to preeminence over most of them, since not only was it one of the first really free schools established in England, but its establishment was solely due to the desire of a great scholar and enlightened Christian for the diffusion of pure doctrines in religion and learning...The ancient school shared in the great conflagration of 1666, and was rebuilt by the Mercers Company in 1670. The present structure, the facade of which is shown in our Engraving, was designed and erected by George Smith, Esq. the architect of the Mercers Company, in 1826. It has the advantage of two additional masters houses, and cloisters for a playground - such as it is - underneath. The four masters houses are spacious and commodious residences'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the east end of St. Paul's Churchyard, showcasing the historic St. Paul's School in all its grandeur. Established in England over five centuries ago, St. Paul's School holds a significant place in the annals of education, preceding many of its contemporaries. Its inception was the brainchild of a renowned scholar and devout Christian, driven by a passion for disseminating knowledge and religious truths. The school, which once stood among the first wave of free educational institutions in the country, has weathered the test of time and continues to thrive. Despite not occupying the top echelon of some of its counterparts, St. Paul's School boasts an impressive pedigree. The ancient institution survived the devastating fire of 1666 and was subsequently rebuilt by the Mercers' Company in 1670. The present structure, depicted in this photograph taken in 1862, was designed and constructed by George Smith, Esq., the architect of the Mercers' Company, in 1826. The building's facade, a testament to Smith's architectural prowess, features four spacious and commodious masters' houses and cloisters that serve as a playground. The cloisters, though modest, provide a unique feature that sets the school apart from many of its contemporaries. The rich history of St. Paul's School is a testament to the enduring power of education and the vision of those who have dedicated their lives to nurturing young minds. This photograph offers a glimpse into the past, providing a window into the storied history of one of England's most venerable institutions.
