EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken by Russian local photographer V.V. Lanin between 1865 and 1871, presents a Gilyak boy wearing a traditional kaftan. The image is part of an album containing 154 photographs, which were presented as a gift to the Imperial Public Library of St. Petersburg by merchant V.P. Myl'nikov upon his return from the Amur region. The collection represents a rich and diverse array of subjects, including municipal scenes of Blagoveshchensk, Nikolaevsk-na-Amure, and Vladivostok; images of native life and culture; views of nature; and commerce along the Amur, Ussuri, and Suifun Rivers. The photograph showcases the Gilyak boy, seated and wearing a kaftan, which is an essential element of the traditional Gilyak costume. The oval-shaped, long-sleeved garment is cinched at the waist and features intricate designs and patterns. The boy's father or another family member is seen placing a comforting arm around his shoulder, adding a sense of warmth and intimacy to the image. This photograph is a significant historical record of the Gilyak people, also known as the Nivkh, who inhabit the Amur-Heilong region in the Russian Far East. The image offers a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of this indigenous community and contributes to the ethnographic and anthropological records of the time. The photograph's composition, with its simple yet powerful imagery, continues to captivate viewers and offers a window into the past.
