This historic map print, titled "General Map of Moscow Province: Showing Postal and Major Roads, Stations and the Distance in Versts between Them," was created in 1821 by Colonel Vasilii Petrovich Piadyshev and engraver Faleleef. The map is part of a larger work, "Geograficheskii atlas Rossiiskoi imperii, tsarstva Pol'skogo i velikogo kniazhestva Finliandskogo" (Geographical atlas of the Russian Empire, the Kingdom of Poland, and the Grand Duchy of Finland), which contained 60 maps of the Russian Empire. The detailed 1821 map of Moscow Province reflects the extensive mapping efforts carried out by Russian military cartographers during the first quarter of the 19th century. The map showcases population centers, each denoted by six gradations based on size, postal stations, roads of four types, provincial and district borders, monasteries, and factories. Distances are indicated in versts, a Russian measure equal to 1.07 kilometers, which was commonly used during that period. The map's legends and place-names are written in both Russian and French, demonstrating the international reach and influence of the Russian Empire during that time. This intricately detailed map offers a glimpse into the geography, infrastructure, and administrative divisions of Moscow Province during the early 19th century. Colonel Piadyshev's expertise and dedication to accurate mapping resulted in a valuable historical record, providing insights into the geography, transportation networks, and settlement patterns of the Moscow Province during this era.
