EDITORS COMMENTS
This historic map print, titled "General Map of Kaluga Province: Showing Postal and Major Roads, Stations and the Distance in Versts between Them," dates back to 1822. The map is a part of a larger work, "Geograficheskii atlas Rossiiskoi imperii, tsarstva Pol'skogo i velikogo kniazhestva Finliandskogo" (Geographical atlas of the Russian Empire, the Kingdom of Poland, and the Grand Duchy of Finland), which contained sixty maps of the Russian Empire. The map was compiled and engraved by Colonel Vasilii Petrovich Piadyshev and Faleleef. The map provides a detailed representation of the Kaluga Province during the early 19th century. It showcases population centers, six gradations in size, postal stations, roads of four types, provincial and district borders, monasteries, and factories. The distances between locations are indicated in versts, a Russian measurement equal to approximately 1.07 kilometers, which was commonly used during that period. The map's meticulousness is a reflection of the detailed mapping efforts carried out by Russian military cartographers in the first quarter of the 19th century. The legends and place-names are written in both Russian and French, indicating the map's potential use by both the Russian and European communities. This map offers a unique glimpse into the geography and infrastructure of the Kaluga Province during a significant period in Russian history.
