EDITORS COMMENTS
This historic map print, titled "General Map of Grodno Province and the Belostok Region: Showing Postal and Major Roads, Stations and the Distance in Versts between Them," was created by Colonel Vasilii Petrovich Piadyshev and Iwanoff in 1820. The map is a part of the larger work, "Geograficheskii atlas Rossiiskoi imperii, tsarstva Pol'skogo i velikogo kniazhestva Finliandskogo" (Geographical atlas of the Russian Empire, the Kingdom of Poland, and the Grand Duchy of Finland), which contained sixty maps of the Russian Empire. The map displays the Grodno Province and the Belostok region, which now mostly corresponds to present-day Belarus. It reflects the meticulous mapping efforts of Russian military cartographers during the first quarter of the 19th century. The map includes population centers, categorized into five gradations based on size, postal stations, roads (four types), provincial and district borders, and taverns. Distances are indicated in versts, a Russian measurement now obsolete, equal to approximately 1.07 kilometers. The map's legends and place-names are written in both Russian and Polish, reflecting the multicultural nature of the region during that time. The detailed and accurate representation of the territory makes it an essential historical document for understanding the geography and infrastructure of the region during the early 19th century. This map is a testament to the extensive cartographic work carried out by Piadyshev and Iwanoff during the Russian Empire.
