French Renaissance Gobelins tapestries, (1898). Creator: Unknown
French Renaissance Gobelins tapestries, (1898). Figs 1-3: Borders on a tapestry carpet after [Charles] Le Brun (made 1665-72). Figs 4-6: Border from a tapestry after Noel Coypel (made 1670-80). Fig 7: Border from a tapestry of the 16th century...since the 16th century such wall-decorating carpets again found favour in the houses of the wealthy, all the more since the hangings of wool, woven in the Netherlands, and embellished with various figural representations, were sold all over the world and quite superseded the silk or linen tapestry. Also in France, under Louis XIV such a manufactory of tapestry was established by [the] Gobelin brothers, from whom the tapestries woven there, and afterwards all fabrics of this kind were named, Gobelins. Plate 66 from " The Historic Styles of Ornament" translated from the German of H. Dolmetsch. [B.T. Batford, London, 1898]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a collection of French Renaissance Gobelins tapestries, dating back to 1898. The intricate details and exquisite craftsmanship of these tapestries are truly remarkable. In figures 1-3, we can admire the borders on a tapestry carpet designed by Charles Le Brun between 1665 and 1672. Figures 4-6 display a border from a tapestry created by Noel Coypel during the years 1670-1680. Figurative representations embellish these wool hangings, which gained popularity among the wealthy since the 16th century. During Louis XIV's reign in France, the renowned Gobelin brothers established a prestigious tapestry manufactory that produced exceptional pieces like those depicted here. These magnificent fabrics became known as "Gobelins" setting an enduring standard for quality and artistry. Plate 66 from "The Historic Styles of Ornament" provides us with this glimpse into history through its translation from German by H. Dolmetsch in London, circa 1898. The image captures not only nature and animals but also elements of interior design, mythology, and symbolism prevalent during the Baroque era. The symmetrical patterns adorned with garlands, cherubs, peacocks, flowers, and mythical creatures transport us to another time—a world where beauty was intricately woven into every thread. This print serves as both an homage to past artistic achievements and an inspiration for contemporary designers seeking timeless elegance in their creations.
