Fishing in Springtime, 1700s. Creator: Ike Taiga (Japanese, 1723-1776)
Fishing in Springtime, 1700s. Ike Taiga was subject to many artistic influences; we know he practiced Zen calligraphy from an early age, his father may have had ties to the famous painter Ogata Korin (1658-1716), he may have trained under a Tosa school painter, and he is thought to have seen Western images early on that informed his approach in representing depth. Though he started with professional beginnings--making a living after his fathers death by selling paintings on fans--he surrounded himself with the members of the literati community, and never stopped absorbing stylistic influences from diverse sources throughout his career. As a result, his style is unique and aesthetically definitive of nanga --the name given to Japanese literati painting

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating print that showcases the artistic brilliance of Ike Taiga, a renowned Japanese painter from the Edo period. Taiga's unique style and aesthetic sensibilities are beautifully captured in this hanging scroll, created using ink and color on silk. Taiga's artistic journey was shaped by various influences throughout his life. From practicing Zen calligraphy at an early age to potentially being connected to famous painters like Ogata Korin, he constantly sought inspiration from diverse sources. It is believed that he even drew upon Western images to enhance his understanding of depth in his compositions. Starting as a professional artist selling paintings on fans after his father's death, Taiga immersed himself in the literati community. This allowed him to absorb different stylistic elements throughout his career, resulting in a distinctive approach known as nanga - Japanese literati painting. The serene scene depicted in "Fishing in Springtime" transports viewers to a tranquil landscape where nature and human activity harmoniously coexist. The delicate brushstrokes and meticulous attention to detail showcase Taiga's mastery over the medium. This exquisite print is part of the collection at The Cleveland Museum of Art and serves as a testament to Ike Taiga's enduring legacy within Japanese art history. As we admire this piece today, we can appreciate how it encapsulates both tradition and innovation while capturing the essence of springtime fishing during the 1700s.
