First Visit of Japanese Interpreters

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating engraving by Russian artist Andrey Grigor'evich Ukhtomsky, taken from the 1813 atlas "Voyage Autour du Monde par la Route du Nord" (Voyage Around the World by the Northern Route). This atlas was published by the Russian Academy of Sciences and is one of the largest publications of engravings from tsarist Russia. The image depicts a significant moment during the 1803-06 circumnavigation expedition led by Captain Ivan Fyodorovich Kruzenshtern. In this scene, Russian sailors are meeting with Japanese interpreters aboard a small rowboat. The encounter represents the first recorded interaction between the Russians and the Japanese since the 17th century. The atlas, which includes 109 plates based on the drawings of doctor, naturalist, and official artist V.G. Tilesius, offers a glimpse into the diverse cultures and landscapes encountered during the voyage. The collection showcases views of Sakhalin, Kamchatka, and the Kurile Islands, as well as representations of indigenous peoples and local fauna from throughout the South and North Pacific. This historic moment, captured by Ukhtomsky's skilled hand, serves as a testament to the spirit of exploration and the meeting of frontiers between different nations. The image is a valuable piece of heritage art, showcasing the rich cultural exchange that took place during the 19th century, and is a reminder of the significant role the Russian Academy of Sciences played in documenting and preserving the world's knowledge during this period.
