EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph print depicts The Faid Gihaad, the magnificent yacht of the Viceroy of Egypt, Mohamed Said Pasha, during its historic voyage up the River Thames in 1862. The paddle-steamer, a marvel of elegant and costly design, boasts an exterior adorned in white and gold. With a length of 383ft., The Faid Gihaad is the largest steamer ever attempted to navigate to Woolwich, surpassing its original length by an impressive 69ft., as expertly lengthened by Forrester of Liverpool. The quarter-deck of this grand vessel is covered with rich floorcloth and shielded from the elements by a pristine white canvas awning. The Egyptian emblem, the crescent, is prominently displayed throughout the ship's decorations and furnishings. The Faid Gihaad's journey to Britain was a significant event, marking a royal visit from the Viceroy of Egypt, Mohamed Said Pasha, to Queen Victoria. The vessel's arrival in London, as documented in the Illustrated London News, generated great excitement and fascination among the British public. This evocative print, created by the skilled hand of Edwin Weedon, offers a glimpse into the grandeur and opulence of maritime travel during the 19th century. The Faid Gihaad's passage up the River Thames serves as a testament to the power and allure of international diplomacy and the enduring fascination with the exotic lands and cultures of Egypt.
