In 1803-06, Captain I. F. Kruzenshtern became the first Russian to circumnavigate the globe. This atlas, published by the Russian Academy of Sciences in 1813, includes maps of Kruzenshtern's route and 109 plates based upon the drawings of V. G. Tilesius, a doctor, naturalist, and the official artist of the expedition. It is one of the largest publications of engravings from tsarist Russia. The subjects depicted include views of Sakhalin, Kamchatka, and the Kurile Islands; representations of Siberian natives and other peoples encountered during the voyage; and local fish and birds from throughout the South and North Pacific

EDITORS COMMENTS
This set of three prints, created by Russian artist Pavel Ivanovich Maslovskii in 1813, is a fascinating glimpse into the natural history discoveries made during the circumnavigation voyage led by Captain Ivan Fyodorovich Kruzenshtern between 1803 and 1806. The prints, part of an atlas published by the Russian Academy of Sciences, depict a Japanese Golovach, or Pacific halibut. In the first image (F.1), we see the fish in its entirety, its large body and powerful tail fin spread out. In the second image (F.2), we focus on the fish's head, revealing its keen eyes and small, sharp teeth. In the third image (F.3), we get a unique perspective, looking from below where the small nipples on its gullet are visible. These prints are a testament to the detailed observations and documentation of the natural world that took place during Kruzenshtern's expedition. The voyage, one of the largest publications of engravings from tsarist Russia, included maps of the expedition route and 109 plates based on the drawings of V.G. Tilesius, the expedition's doctor, naturalist, and official artist. The prints are a rich source of historical and cultural significance, showcasing the meeting of frontiers and the exploration of new lands and marine life.
