EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the entrance to the historic tunnel of the Liverpool & Manchester railway in Edge Hill, Liverpool, during the 1820s. The artist, John Davies, skillfully portrays a construction site bustling with workmen and scaffolding as they laboriously build one of the first-ever railway tunnels. Designed by renowned engineer William MacKenzie under the guidance of chief engineer George Stephenson, this monumental project marked a significant milestone in civil engineering and transportation history. The Liverpool & Manchester Railway, which opened its tracks in September 1830, revolutionized travel between these two cities. The image showcases not only the impressive scale of this ambitious endeavor but also provides a glimpse into daily life at that time. Amidst a rugged landscape dotted with tools and materials, dedicated workers diligently carry out their tasks while others observe from various vantage points. As we admire this monochrome engraving from the nineteenth century, it is impossible not to be transported back in time to witness firsthand how progress was made against all odds. This print serves as both an artistic representation and historical documentation of an era when railways were transforming society's concept of transport and connectivity. With its attention to detail and evocative atmosphere, John Davies' artwork immortalizes not just a physical structure but also pays tribute to those who labored tirelessly behind its creation.
