EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print titled "Easing The Curb, 1869" artist John Tenniel skillfully captures the essence of Emperor Napoleon III's struggles during a tumultuous period in French history. Depicted is Napoleon, with his top hat and regal attire, delicately easing the curb on a horse-drawn carriage. This act symbolizes his attempt to navigate through the challenges he faced both politically and personally. During this time, Napoleon had implemented constitutional reforms that significantly reduced his power as an emperor. However, despite these efforts to align himself with a more democratic system, public opinion of him remained low. In an effort to regain favor and demonstrate his commitment to serving the people's interests, he announced plans to relinquish some of his prerogatives. Tenniel's cartoon cleverly portrays the tension surrounding Napoleon's decision. The frightened expressions on both the faces of men and women in the image reflect their uncertainty about what lies ahead for their country under such circumstances. The monochrome engraving adds depth and intensity to this satirical caricature. It serves as a reminder of France's rich heritage while capturing a pivotal moment in its history. This print not only showcases Tenniel's artistic prowess but also provides viewers with insight into one man’s struggle for acceptance amidst political turmoil. It serves as a poignant reminder that even those in positions of power face moments of vulnerability and fear.
