Dock in course of construction at Boulogne, 1862. Creator: Unknown
Dock in course of construction at Boulogne, [France], 1862. The entire dock, including the sluice-entrance, will cover nearly seventy English acres...the total cost...is estimated at something like two millions of sterling...on the right...is the lifting apparatus for raising the material excavated, which is carried round behind to form a battery facing the sea and commanding entrance to the port; on the left is the pumping-engine used to raise the water from the works. The bottom is being formed of ten-ft. concrete...and solid marble blocks, each weighing thirty-two tons, are being prepared for the reception of the sluice-gates. A large proportion of the sand excavated has been...[used] in the creation of the military work just mentioned, from which guns are pointed in the direction of the Channel...vessels, instead of proceeding to Calais, as at present, will be enabled to put in here with more safety...the Boulogne Dock...will be sufficiently large and deep to accommodate vessels of the greatest bulk and heaviest tonnage, even to the extent of men-of-war fully armed and equipped...As may be seen from our Engraving, the dock will be entered on the south-east or right-hand side, as vessels proceed up the harbour from the sea into Boulogne'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the progress of the Boulogne Dock's construction in 1862, as seen from an unknown photographer's perspective. The dock, which would eventually cover approximately seventy English acres, was a significant engineering feat of its time. The image reveals the dock's impressive infrastructure, with the lifting apparatus for raising excavated material visible on the right. This machinery was not only used for the dock's construction but also for the creation of a military battery facing the sea, providing added protection for the entrance to the port. On the left side of the photograph, the pumping-engine used to raise water from the works can be observed. The dock's foundation was being formed using ten-foot-thick concrete and solid marble blocks, each weighing an impressive thirty-two tons, which would later receive the sluice-gates. The creation of this dock was expected to revolutionize maritime travel to Boulogne, as vessels would no longer need to proceed to Calais for safer entry. The Boulogne Dock was designed to accommodate even the largest and heaviest tonnage vessels, including men-of-war fully armed and equipped. As shown in the photograph, the dock would be entered on the south-east or right-hand side as vessels approached Boulogne from the sea. This engraving, published in the Illustrated London News in 1862, offers a fascinating glimpse into the engineering prowess of the era and the transformative impact of this dock on maritime travel to Boulogne.
