EDITORS COMMENTS
Costumes de Différents Pays," or "Costumes of Different Countries," is a series of engravings created by Jacques Grasset de Saint-Sauveur in the late 18th century. This particular image, titled "Guerrier de Longo," depicts an Angolan warrior from the Lunda Norte region of Angola, located in present-day southwestern Democratic Republic of the Congo and northern Angola. The warrior is shown in full length, dressed in traditional clothing, with bare feet and a hand-tinted headdress adorned with feathers and beads. The fabric of his clothing is intricately patterned, and he wears a large, colorful headscarf wrapped around his head. The warrior's body is strong and muscular, reflecting the physical demands of his role as a warrior in his community. The engraving, which is part of the "Costumes de Differents Pays" series, was produced in France during the 1790s and is an important example of ethnographic art from the period. It provides a glimpse into the diverse cultural traditions of Africa during a time when European exploration and colonization were expanding rapidly. Today, this hand-colored engraving is held in the collection of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), where it is an invaluable resource for scholars and students of anthropology, ethnography, and the history of fashion. The image offers a window into the past, allowing us to appreciate the rich cultural heritage of the Angolan people and the artistic skill of Jacques Grasset de Saint-Sauveur.
