Coronation Express L. N. E. R. 1940

Coronation Express L.N.E.R. 1940. A streamlined express passenger train which ran between London Kings Cross and Edinburgh Waverley. It was named to mark the coronation of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, and was inaugurated in 1937. The design was based on the very successful streamlined train, The Silver Jubilee, built in 1935, but instead of being painted silver it was given a two-tone blue livery. Internally it was decorated in the Art Deco style. From Trains of Today. [Juvenile Productions Ltd. London, 1940]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the iconic Coronation Express L. N. E. R. 1940, a remarkable streamlined express passenger train that traversed the scenic route between London Kings Cross and Edinburgh Waverley. Originally introduced in 1937 to commemorate the coronation of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, this majestic locomotive was an epitome of elegance and speed. Inspired by the success of The Silver Jubilee train built in 1935, this magnificent blue-hued marvel boasted a sleek design that exuded timeless beauty. Its Art Deco-inspired interior further enhanced its allure, providing passengers with a luxurious and stylish journey through time. As depicted in this image captured by Trains of Today in 1940, billowing plumes of smoke gracefully rise from its mighty steam engine as it glides effortlessly along the tracks. Against a backdrop of picturesque countryside scenery, one can almost feel the exhilarating sensation experienced by those fortunate enough to be aboard this extraordinary mode of transportation. Inextricably linked to both wartime resilience and royal events, this steam locomotive symbolizes an era when travel was not merely about reaching destinations but also about embracing adventure and indulging in opulence. It serves as a testament to the innovation and grandeur that defined railway transport during the mid-20th century. Preserved within this print is not only an exquisite piece of history but also an embodiment of progress, sophistication, and national pride—a true testament to human ingenuity amidst challenging times.
