EDITORS COMMENTS
Char-a-Banc for the Queen of Portugal, 1850: A Regal Voyage through Victorian Britain This photograph print, hailing from the mid-19th century, showcases a pair of exquisite Char-a-Banc carriages, meticulously crafted for Her Majesty Queen Maria II of Portugal. Commissioned by Thrupp and Co., a renowned carriage manufacturer in Oxford-street, these elegant chariots were designed for the Queen's use during her summer sojourns at the Royal residences of Cintra and Mafra. The Char-a-Bancs are a testament to the grandeur and sophistication of the era. Their sleek design, finished in the highest style, boasts caned seats, lined with pearl-coloured Spitalfields silk, and trimmed with intricate lace of the grape-vine pattern. The lamps, shaped elegantly, are richly ornamented with chased brass and Bohemian glass, adding a touch of opulence to these regal vehicles. Maria II, born as Maria da Glória Joana Carlota Leopoldina de Áustria e de Bragança, Gabriela de Saxe-Coburg e Gotha, was the Queen of Portugal from 1826 to 1853. Her reign was marked by significant political and social changes, and these Char-a-Bancs served as a symbol of her refined taste and royal status. The Illustrated London News, a leading Victorian newspaper, reported on these magnificent carriages, highlighting their beauty and the exceptional craftsmanship that went into their creation. This print, a window into the past, offers a glimpse into the grandeur of the Victorian era and the regal journeys of Queen Maria II.
