Casting a monster cylinder for Her Majesty's armour-plated frigate Agincourt at Maudslay... 1862. Creator: Unknown
Casting a monster cylinder for Her Majesty's armour-plated frigate Agincourt at the foundry of Maudslay, Sons, and Field, Westminster-road, London, 1862. This cylinder...is intended for a pair of engines of 1350-horsepower...Its diameter is 101 inches. The metal, which weighed 30 tons, was melted in four cupola-furnaces, and run thence into three ladles lined with clay to the thickness of an inch and a half; these ladles were lifted by travelling-cranes into their proper position, and the molten metal was poured into the mould. The men in this fiery furnace, with iron rods in their hands, are engaged in preventing impurities from getting into the mould; whilst, at the same time, each is occupied in screening his face from the fierce glare which beats upon him from the fiery mass of metal, liquid with heat, and seemingly threatening annihilation to all. The engines of the Agincourt are larger than any yet fitted for the Admiralty...'. From "Illustrated London News", 1862

EDITORS COMMENTS
Casting the Monster Cylinder: A Feat of Engineering at Maudslay, Sons, and Field Foundry, London, 1862 This photograph captures the intense and intricate process of casting a massive cylinder for the armour-plated frigate HMS Agincourt at the renowned Maudslay, Sons, and Field Foundry in London, 1862. The cylinder, with a diameter of 101 inches, was destined for a pair of engines with a combined horsepower of 1350. The creation of this colossal cylinder began with the melting of 30-ton metal in four cupola-furnaces. Once the metal reached the desired temperature, it was transferred into three clay-lined ladles, which were then hoisted into position using travelling cranes. The molten metal was carefully poured into the mould, and the workers in the fiery furnace used iron rods to prevent impurities from entering the mould. Protecting their faces from the intense heat and glare, these men worked tirelessly to ensure the success of this engineering feat. The engines of the Agincourt were larger than any previously built for the Admiralty, making this a groundbreaking moment in maritime history. The photograph offers a glimpse into the arduous process of casting such a monumental component, highlighting the skill, determination, and innovation of the engineers and labourers involved. This image serves as a testament to the engineering prowess of the time and the significant role foundries played in shaping the technological advancements of the Victorian era.
