Bonaparte at Arcole, 1797, (1896)
Bonaparte at Arcole, 1797, (1896). Typogravure after the painting by Antoine-Jean Gros. This portrait was painted by Gros in Italy in 1797; at the solicitation of Josephine, Bonaparte sat for it. It was presented to the Louvre in 1883 by Mme Milliet. It is not the painting from which the Longhi engraving was made, but most probably the sketch made from life for the painting. From Life of Napoleon Bonaparte, Volume I, by William Milligan Sloane. [The Century Co. New York, 1896]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This typogravure print showcases the iconic portrait of Bonaparte at Arcole, painted by Antoine-Jean Gros in Italy during 1797. Commissioned by Josephine, this masterpiece captures the essence of Napoleon Bonaparte as he sat for it. The painting was later presented to the Louvre in 1883 by Mme Milliet, adding to its historical significance. Although not the exact painting used for the Longhi engraving, this print is believed to be a sketch made from life for that very purpose. It offers a glimpse into the artistic process and provides valuable insight into Gros' technique and style. The image transports us back to an era when Bonaparte was known as General Bonaparte, before his rise to become Emperor of France. His commanding presence is evident through his confident gaze and military attire, symbolizing his leadership during the Battle of Arcole. As we delve into history through this artwork, we are reminded of Napoleon's significant role in shaping Europe during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. This portrait serves as a testament to his enduring legacy and influence on both French society and global politics. With its vibrant colors and meticulous attention to detail, this typogravure print allows us to appreciate Gros' talent while providing a window into an important chapter in European history - one where war met artistry on Italian soil.
