Blast furnaces for production of iron at Coalbrookdale, Shropshire, c1830. This scene is on the river Severn a few miles from Ironbridge. On the left, behind the tall chimney, it is possible to see the iron walkway giving access to the two blast furnaces in order to charge them with ore and fuel. The combination of its reserves of coal, iron ore and the proximity of the busy River Severn made Coalbrookdale the cradle of the Industrial Revolution in Britain. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the blast furnaces for iron production at Coalbrookdale, Shropshire, in the early 19th century. The artist, HW Bond, beautifully captures the industrial landscape of this significant location on the river Severn. In the foreground of the image, we see two blast furnaces towering over a bustling scene. Behind them stands a tall chimney and an iron walkway used to charge these furnaces with ore and fuel. This glimpse into history reveals how Coalbrookdale's abundant reserves of coal and iron ore, combined with its proximity to the busy river Severn, played a pivotal role in shaping Britain's Industrial Revolution. The print also highlights various elements associated with trade and manufacturing during this era. The buildings and factories scattered across the landscape symbolize progress and innovation within the iron and steel industry. However, it is impossible to ignore that such advancements came at a cost – evident through hints of pollution coloring both air and water. Henry Gastineau skillfully recreated this scene from his original watercolor painting, capturing not only its geographical features but also conveying a sense of timelessness within this historical moment. As viewers engage with this print today, they are transported back to witness firsthand how Coalbrookdale became known as the cradle of Britain's Industrial Revolution.
