Benny Lynch, Scottish boxer, 1938

Benny Lynch, Scottish boxer, 1938. Born in the Gorbals district of Glasgow, Lynch (1913-1946) has been described as Scotlands greatest ever boxer. Learnung his skills in carnivals in the West of Scotland during the Great Depression, Lynch won the Scottish flyweight title in 1934, before taking the British and world titles by beating Englands Jackie Brown on 8 September 1935. He successfully defended his titles against Pat Palmer, the Filipino Small Montana and Peter Kane, but his hard-drinking lifestyle caused him difficulties in making the flyweight limit. In 1938 he was overweight for a rematch with Kane, although the fight, which ended in a draw, went ahead after Lynch agreed to pay a forfeit. Later the same year he beat Jackie Jurich of the United States, but had to forfeit the title for being overweight for the bout. Lynch only fought twice more, losing both times, and died aged just 33 from malnutrition after suffering from alcoholism. He won the A Churchmans Cigarettes picture card. Benny Lynch, Scotland's Boxing Legend: A Glimpse into the Life of a Remarkable Fighter". This print captures Benny Lynch, the Scottish boxer who left an indelible mark on the world of boxing during his short but illustrious career. Born in Glasgow's Gorbals district in 1913, Lynch emerged as Scotland's greatest ever pugilist. Honing his skills amidst the hardships of the Great Depression, Lynch showcased his talent at carnivals across West Scotland. In 1934, he clinched the Scottish flyweight title and went on to claim both British and world titles by defeating England's Jackie Brown on September 8th, 1935. His triumphs continued as he successfully defended his titles against formidable opponents such as Pat Palmer, Filipino Small Montana, and Peter Kane. However, Lynch faced challenges due to his hard-drinking lifestyle that affected his ability to make weight for fights. This led to setbacks like being overweight for a rematch with Kane in 1938. Despite this setback and having to pay a forfeit fee for their draw match-up, Lynch remained resilient. Tragically though, this extraordinary athlete succumbed to malnutrition at just 33 years old after battling alcoholism. Nevertheless, Benny Lynch will forever be remembered as one of boxing's most exceptional talents whose legacy continues to inspire generations.
