Gorbals area of Glasgow; Two young boys walking along a street in 1948

31st January 1948: Two boys walking along a street in the run-down Gorbals area of Glasgow. The Gorbals tenements were built quickly and cheaply in the 1840s, providing housing for Glasgow's burgeoning population of industrial workers. Conditions were appalling; overcrowding was standard and sewage and water facilities inadequate. The tenements housed about 40, 000 people with up to eight family members sharing a single room, 30 residents sharing a toilet and 40 sharing a tap. By the time this photograph was taken 850 tenements had been demolished since 1920. Redevelopment of the area began in the late 1950s and the tenements were replaced with a modern tower block complex in the sixties. The onopordum acanthium or Scottish thistle is seen growing in Finsbury Park in London

The onopordum acanthium or Scottish thistle is seen growing in Finsbury Park in London, June 15, 2014. The Scottish thistle is the national symbol of Scotland and inspired the mascot for this year's Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Scottish separatists are closing the gap on their unionist rivals as a September independence referendum draws nearer, according to a poll. But pollster TNS said it would still be a "major task" for them to draw level in time. In a poll of 995 adults, TNS found that support for the pro-independence campaign had grown by two points to 32 percent compared with last month, while the campaign to reject independence had slipped back a point to 41 percent. In the run-up to the vote, Reuters photographer Suzanne Plunkett took a series of close-up pictures of food, drink and various objects typically associated with Scotland. Picture taken June 15, 2014. Frosty Mossy Colorful Tree Trunk

In Scotland, between The River Garry and Loch Oich, near the Village of Invergarry is a magical unnamed magical mossy forest that looks like it's right out of a fairytale. On this cold December morning a rare event occurred. Cold temperatures, fog, and a high pressure front created perfect conditions for hoar frost to form. Before my very eyes, the forest transformed into a mystical sugar coated delight. You can see the beginnings of the frost coating the tree top canopies, delicately glazing the intricate branches.
