The Batte of the Alma - painted by Horace Vernet, 1856. Creator: Henry Duff Linton

The Batte of the Alma - painted by Horace Vernet, 1856. Crimean War scene:..a Zouave and a Highlander, both wounded, and trudging away from the fight, evidently savage that they are disabled. The Zouave wildly waving a [sword, ] trophy of his prowess...Nearly all the central figures are portraits. The battle is seen from afar; although the ball whizzing past within a few paces of the Prince [an admirable likeness] is meant to indicate that the assembled officers are actually under fire....Then there are General Thomas, wounded, and sustained by his Aide-de-Camp; Colonel Desuarets, first Aide-de-Camp to the Prince; the Duke d'Abrantes...The poor fellow bathing his horse's leg is one of the choicer specimens of Vernet's skill...In the central distance...is a group of wounded Russians, most happily introduced; and, in the low ground, the river Alma is seen winding along'. EDITORS COMMENTS
The Battle of the Alma," painted by Horace Vernet in 1856, captures the intensity and chaos of the Crimean War in this stunning and intricately detailed oil on canvas masterpiece. The scene unfolds from a distance, with the Alma River winding through the low ground in the central distance. The heart of the painting focuses on a group of soldiers, both British and Russian, each bearing the scars of battle. Among them, a Zouave and a Highlander are depicted, both wounded and trudging away from the fight. The Zouave, with his wildly waving sword, is a testament to his prowess on the battlefield, despite his injury. Nearby, officers, including an admirable likeness of Prince Frederick, Duke of York and Albany, are shown under direct fire, with a ball whizzing past within a few paces of the Prince. The painting is rich in detail and character, with numerous portraits of key figures. Among them, General Thomas, wounded and sustained by his Aide-de-Camp, Colonel Desuarets, first Aide-de-Camp to the Prince, and the Duke d'Abrantes, are all depicted in the midst of the battle. A poignant moment is captured as a soldier attends to his wounded horse, showcasing one of the choicer specimens of Vernet's skill. The presence of wounded Russians adds an authentic and poignant touch to the painting, highlighting the brutal reality of war. Overall, "The Battle of the Alma" is a powerful and evocative work of art that transports the viewer to the heart of the Crimean War, offering a glimpse into the courage, determination, and sacrifice of the soldiers who fought in this historic conflict.
