An April Sunset from Hut Point, Looking West, 1911, (1913). Artist: Edward Wilson

An April Sunset from Hut Point, Looking West, 1911, (1913). The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. From Scotts Last Expedition, Volume II. [Smith, Elder & Co. London, 1913]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, titled "An April Sunset from Hut Point, Looking West, 1911" captures the ethereal beauty of the Antarctic landscape during Captain Robert Falcon Scott's final expedition. Taken by artist Edward Wilson as part of the Terra Nova Expedition (1910-1913), this image showcases the breathtaking colors and serene atmosphere that enveloped Hut Point. Scott's expedition aimed to continue scientific research in Antarctica while also striving to be the first to reach the South Pole. Accompanied by a diverse team of experts including geologists, zoologists, surgeons, photographers, and more, Scott embarked on this challenging journey with great ambition. However, upon reaching their destination on January 17th, 1912, they were met with crushing disappointment. The Norwegian explorer Amundsen had already beaten them to their objective by a month. Despite facing blizzards and dwindling supplies on their return journey, Scott and his remaining team members tragically perished at the end of March. The discovery of their bodies and diaries eight months later added another layer of poignancy to this historic event. This particular photograph serves as a poignant reminder not only of Scott's ill-fated quest but also of the indomitable spirit and relentless pursuit of knowledge that drove these brave explorers forward. Preserved within "Scotts Last Expedition". Volume II (Smith Elder & Co. , London 1913), this print is an enduring testament to both human resilience in extreme conditions and nature's ability to inspire awe even in its harshest environments.
