EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph captures the regal presence of Haile Selassie I, the legendary Emperor of Ethiopia from 1930 until his overthrow in 1974. Born in Ejersa Goro, Ethiopia in 1892, Haile Selassie rose through the ranks of Ethiopian politics to become Emperor in 1930, following the assassination of his predecessor, Ras Tafari Kadamawi. Haile Selassie's reign was marked by modernization efforts, including the establishment of a national army, the expansion of education and healthcare, and the adoption of a constitution. He also played a significant role in international affairs, serving as a leader in the League of Nations and the United Nations. In this image, Haile Selassie is depicted wearing the traditional Ethiopian imperial regalia, including a magnificent feathered headdress known as a "gada" or "gadis," which symbolized his divine right to rule. The intricately woven and dyed feathers were sourced from various birds, including the ostrich, vulture, and ibis, and were believed to grant the wearer protection and strength. Haile Selassie's reign came to an end in 1974, following a military coup led by the Derg regime. He was exiled to Central Africa, where he died in 1975. Despite the challenges of his later years, Haile Selassie remains a revered figure in Ethiopian history, celebrated for his efforts to modernize the country and maintain its independence in the face of colonialism and foreign intervention.
