EDITORS COMMENTS
In this striking photograph, Haakon VII, the King of Norway from 1906 until his death in 1957, is seen in full regalia, proudly wearing the uniform of the Norwegian Army. Born as Prince Charles of Denmark on August 3, 1872, Haakon was the eldest son of King Frederick VIII of Denmark. His life was marked by significant historical events that shaped the modern history of Norway and Denmark. Haakon's father, Frederick VIII, was the reigning monarch of Denmark when Norway was still under Danish rule. However, growing nationalist sentiments in Norway led to the country's secession in 1905. Haakon, who had spent much of his childhood in Norway, was chosen as the new king by the Norwegian parliament, the Storting. He was crowned on November 22, 1906, in Trondheim, Norway. In this photograph, Haakon wears the uniform of the Norwegian Army, complete with epaulettes adorned with the Norwegian crown. The image captures the moment of pride and determination in the eyes of the new king, who was committed to leading his people towards a prosperous and independent future. Haakon's reign was marked by stability and progress, and he is remembered as a beloved and respected monarch in Norwegian history. Haakon VII passed away on January 21, 1957, at the age of 84. He is buried in the Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim, Norway, alongside his wife, Queen Maud, and their daughter, Princess Märtha. This photograph is a testament to Haakon's legacy as a strong and visionary leader who played a pivotal role in shaping the modern history of Norway.
